Today my kids started their school year. They all rushed out the door so excited to start their adventure. It just get a tremendous amount of joy seeing their enthusiasm. I can still remember my first days of school. I don't know what they are going to face today, this week, this year, etc., but I hope they are prepared. What does it mean to be prepared? As I start thinking about what kids need to be prepared in this world I come up with words like compassion, grit, patience, persistence, nice, smart, motivated, etc. The list seems this is endless. So, then I start thinking about narrowing it down to just the essentials. Again, this seemed too difficult. I mean, how can you start crossing off any of these skills? Without these skills, they will encounter some challenge and that challenge may be significant. As a parent can I do that? So then I start thinking like a teacher. What are the skills my students need to be prepared for this world? Again I start to make a list. They need to be intelligent, problem solvers, creative, inventive, etc. Then I just start adding the list I made as a parent. And now I'm back to trying to trim down to the essentials and teach those. As a teacher, can I do that? It's a big world out there. Our kids (both the ones we raise and the ones we teach) are going to be faced with challenges I can't even imagine at this point. So, I try to impart all the skills I can think of in every way I know with everything I have everyday. I can't wait to meet them at the bus this afternoon. The house will smell like brownies.
